Writers Block

Don’t be afraid of it. It happens to everyone. Treat it as an occupational
hazard. But don’t let it control you. Have a cup of tea. Think about your boyfriend / girlfriend / partner for ten minutes. And if you don’t have one. How you might get one.

I have a foam filled football I kick around my office for ten minutes. It works for me. It could work for you. What in effect we’re talking about is relaxation and a break from the writing. I do not wish to be crude in any way. But writers block is a bit like constipation. The more you strain. The less you produce. Just let the imagination muscles relax for a bit.

If the writers block is about forming a plot and you just can’t think of anything, try this….

Cut up the front page of eight or nine newspaper headlines and bylines.. Put them in a box/hat.

Shuffle them then pull out a handful of paper and try and make the pieces in to a coherent sentence. The first time I tried it I got:

Margaret Thatcher satisfies six European heads of state every Thursday afternoon . (Now there’s a thought!)
